Panasonic introduced its first Ultra-Mobile PC product as a range of Toughbook products with a width of 7 inches, 6-inch length and two-inch thickness. The new product was named CF-U1. InformationWeek reported, Thursday (26/6/2008), the features contained in the first product are not much different than what is on a regular size notebook, but it is just a smaller dimensioner. In addition, the advantages of this product are on a 5.6-inch touch screen that can be enjoyed even in direct sunlight.

For the CF-U1 processor, Panasonic embraced Intel’s giant vendor by adopting the latest Atom-saving energy processor with one Gigabit-capacity memory. On the hard-drive, CF-U1 is equipped with a 16 GB Solid State Drive (SSD), which has a more robust durability than a regular hard drive despite a shock.

“This product is an answer for two years the demand of commercial organizations that have a small computer with the ability not much different from a regular notebook. With this product we try to expand the wider market segment, including the police, fire brigade, mining industry employees, and other outdoor workers, “said the Panasonic party to its statement.

Completing its UMPC multimedia device, Panasonic also inserts barcode, RFID Reader, and two-megapixel camera. While on wireless connectivity, the CF-U1 has a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection, even capable of supporting 3G technology.

Uniquely, this UMPC does not use cooling fan to reduce the operation sound of the machine, and use a hot-swappable battery that can supply electrical energy up to nine hours.

To be safer, the 2.3-pound CF-U1 is coated with a mixture of magnesium metal that is capable of protective, even when falling from a height of four feet.

Toughbook CF-U1 is presented with Windows operating system, either XP or Vista, is scheduled to have available Panasonic agent and distributor in August. The selling price is estimated to be around USD 2.499.
